Who we are
Founded in 1904, Saints Hockey is one of the University's oldest and largest sports clubs representing 2.5% of the student body. The club has grown significantly in recent times, expanding from six teams in 2014 to 11 in 2024. Our teams play in BUCS and National Leagues, providing students with opportunities to play competitively and recreationally. We are raising £2500 to improve how the men's side of the club is coached to facilitate further growth and development.
The past two seasons have been highly successful for the club. The Men’s First Team have been a significant part of this success, winning BUCS Scottish Tier 1 in 2023/24 and the Scottish National League in 2024/25, earning promotion to the Scottish Premiership for the first time in the team’s history. Looking ahead to next season, the side has the ambition of solidifying its place in the Premiership and push for promotion to BUCS Northern Prem.
Improving the coaching of the men's first team
While the initial primary objective of this project was to raise funds towards an external coach, we have revised our aim, as finding an external coach of suitable quality, who is willing to travel to St Andrews up to four times in a week, is unrealistic at this time. In 2024/25, the side was coached by a current student which was highly successful and he is coaching the side again 2025/26. We believe that the best use for the fund is to up-skill student coaches, providing the Men’s teams with high-quality coaching for years to come. The fund will be used to put senior players and members through coaching courses, with the qualifications gained benefitting the team and the individuals involved. This approach ensures the team has experienced coaches at every training session and match and prolongs the period where the fund is impactful. Yet, the scope for the fund will go beyond coaching courses. It will be used as and when opportunities arise. For example, this may involve bringing in guest external coaches to run sessions, improving the ability of the side and allowing members with membership qualifications to learn from working with highly experienced coaches.
