My mission to empower young people in Zambia through the Duke of Edinburgh Award!

Volunteer zambia

Volunteer Zambia is a programme run by the Wallace Group, which operates through a collaboration between eight UK universities (including St Andrews). It uses sport as a tool to engage, educate and empower young people both in Zambia, around Lusaka, and the UK and enables them to learn key skills such as teamwork and communication while focusing on the enjoyment which sport can bring to the lives of young people.

A Little bit about me

Hi! I am Daniel, a first-year at the University of St Andrews, studying English and Mathematics. I'm really excited to be taking on the role of Duke of Edinburgh Officer for Volunteer Zambia 2026. Having completed my Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, DofE has been a huge part of my life, giving me amazing experiences, friendships and skills in confidence, teamwork and resilience. I am incredibly grateful for what the programme has given me, and I can't wait to give back by helping young people in Lusaka access those same opportunities that sparked my passion for DofE!

MY project

A key part of this journey is raising money to help with travel to Zambia for the 8-week programme, where I'll be supporting young people and the development of the DofE programme within local community hubs.

To reach this goal, I will be fundraising both individually and as part of a team. Over the next few months, I will be organising a range of events, including bake sales, prize raffles, and other small community fundraisers. I am also hoping to partner with local businesses and run activities that bring people together while raising awareness about the project.

I'm excited to make the fundraising process as engaging and enjoyable as possible. Every contribution brings me closer to supporting the incredible work happening in Lusaka, and I am hugely grateful for all the help along the way :)

Where will the money go?

The £2,500 will be an indirect donation to Sport in Action, covering the essential costs that will allow me to travel to Zambia, and support Sport in Action and DofE Zambia in enhancing the scalability of the programme. This includes flights, vaccinations, insurance, visas, accommodation for the 8-week period, and required sports equipment for Zambia.

Every contribution helps me get to Zambia so I can directly support young people and help grow the DofE Award within local communities, allowing more young people to gain confidence, skills and opportunities they otherwise wouldn't have access to.

Help this adventure!

No need to donate to help me succeed! I would be incredibly grateful if you could share my project with anyone and everyone you think might support me, or even just to help spread the word! Whether that be on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, by email, telephone, in a chat over the fence or on your blog; the more people who know about it, the more likely I am to achieve my goal! Please don't forget to sign up as a helper or a follower :) And I know I said you don't need to give money to help, but I'd love it if you did! Please sponsor me and help make this happen. I am so excited to be taking part in this wonderful project.

THANK YOU!
