A short summary of your project
Volunteer Zambia is a programme run by the Wallace Group with NGO Sport in Action, which operates through a collaboration between eight UK universities (including St Andrews). It uses sport as a tool to engage, educate, up-skill local coaches and empower young people. The project is based in Lusaka but works across Zambia to enable and promote the to learning of key skills such as teamwork and communication while maintaining the focus of the enjoyment which sport can bring to the lives of young people.
Who am I?
My name is Amy and I am a fourth year student at the University of St Andrews studying International Relations. I played netball throughout high school, the East Coast Swifts Club and now for my University. I've loved every second of my experience playing and helping others to learn the sport.
Some of you reading this may already know I previously travelled out the Zambia in 2023 as a Netball Development Officer, I am beyond excited and grateful to once again be apart of this project, keep reading below to see what my role will entail this time…
My Story
Some of you will remember I have already travelled out to Zambia in 2023, I am honoured to be included in this project once again! My role this time is slightly different. Having previously been apart of the project I will be using my knowledge to help those who are new to the project this year and further push local hub-site development. Additionally, this year marks the very exciting 20th anniversary of the Volunteer Zambia project. I will also be going travelling out to support the smooth running and promotion of the 20th anniversary event, where I will be creating press articles and media marketing to further raise awareness of this amazing project!!
I love sport and I love helping others get involved in sport, as I've seen first-hand the massive benefits it can have on people's life, both from coaching experience and from my own playing experience. The fact that I have the opportunity to once again share this with others, while learning and developing my coaching and life experience is truly amazing, and I feel so lucky and excited to be apart of this!
Where will the money go?
Money donated will allow me to get necessary vaccinations, book flights and purchase equipment that will aid coaches/ young people in country.
Please note: All payments will be processed at the time of donation. This means you will be charged immediately upon making your donation. In the event that a project does not reach its specified target, your donation will be directed towards the area of greatest need within the programme. This approach allows us to maximise the impact of your support and ensures that your contribution continues to make a meaningful difference. If you have any questions or concerns about this update, please do not hesitate to contact us at saintsfunder@st-andrews.ac.uk.
