Saints volunteer, livingstone

The first programme of its kind in Livingstone, based in the Southern Province. Saints Sport, in support of Sport of Action (SIA) are committing a team of student volunteers from the University of St Andrews to a six-week programme of sport and education within three schools selected by SIA.

Four key sports have been identified as areas in which sustainable growth and development are required in order to support the transition from school to club sport: netball, football, volleyball and handball as well as developing drama as a tool to support learning and communication skills.

The volunteers core aims are to help inspire these young people to develop and use the transferable skills gained through sport and drama as an opportunity for securing employment or further study. We will also be improving the children's knowledge and understanding of English, numeracy, science and health. 

who am i

I am in my final year of my Integrated Masters degree in Chemistry. I am really looking forward to getting involved in this project, helping to enrich the lives of local children in Livingstone. 

Within our group, we will work together to help transform the lives of children, many of whom come from challenging backgrounds, using a combination of activities (such as drama and music) to engage and educate. We hope to enhance young people’s knowledge in topical areas of health and life skills, with a view to developing motivation, self-development and self-reliance through social, cultural and economic empowerment.

how will we raise the money?

Between now and summer, I and the other student volunteers will be working together to raise funds through team events.

Where will the money go

Funds will:

• Cover travel costs to Livingstone and subsistence costs while I’m living there (and if I meet that target).
• Raise further funds for the equipment required to run the sessions.
