Come with us to the seaside!
Who are WE?
We are a group of students from the University of St Andrews Museum and Gallery Studies MLitt degree. The By the Seaside exhibition project is an opportunity for us to put the theories and concepts discussed during our courses into practice and to gain hands-on experience in the many complexities of curating and developing an exhibition.
We are working under the supervision of Dr Agnes Bos (School of Art History), Dr Karen Brown (School of Art History) and Linda Fitzpatrick (Scottish Fisheries Museum).
what are we doing?
Through the By the Seaside exhibition at the Scottish Fisheries Museum we aim to explore the many ways the sea influences our lives, rekindles childhood nostalgia and connects us with nature. The exhibition will also focus on the role the sea plays in improved emotional, mental and physical well-being, and the ocean as a muse.
The exhibition will be onsite at the Scottish Fisheries Museum from 20 March to 20 June 2021.
Programme events will be available online.
All events and activities will be posted on a calendar on the Museum's website.

Why are we doing this?
This exhibition - set within the context of the stress and uncertainty of 2020 - is the perfect platform from which to explore the health and well-being benefits of the sea, how people interact with the sea and how we can protect it for the future.
We will interview various members of the arts, research and health communities in Fife to explore the inter-connectivity between humans and the sea within the context of the North East Fife coastlines.
Because we don't know how long the pandemic restrictions will last, we have also decided to make our project available to the public on the Museum and our project website. It will remain online for at least one year after the end of the exhibition in June 2021.
Where will the donations go?
We have an existing budget of £2000 but we are aiming to reach £3000 so we can cover the expenses of a specialised audio and video streaming service. This will enable us to publish high quality interviews with members of the Fife community.
£160 - will help us get a specialised audio-video streaming service for high quality video interviews and podcasts.
Additional funds raised will allow us to:
- provide health and wellbeing workshops
- create interactive programmes for families
- record podcasts with experts in the arts, ocean science and psychology
- make these programmes as accessible as possible for the public
