Scholarships rely on the power of collective giving and the majority of them are only possible thanks to the collective power and generosity of alumni like you. This is why any size of gift truly does make a difference. We have been able to welcome 159 new scholarship recipients to the University in the 2024-2025 academic year, and since 2018 we have helped more than 1,346 students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to come here from all over the world and go on to create ripples of impact in their chosen careers.
Your support is needed more urgently than ever: still-increasing costs of living and learning, declining public investment in universities, and obstacles to international mobility, are just a few of the barriers that face students who could be pursuing life-changing, and world-changing, careers in their field. Please help us to create ripples of impact by supporting a scholarship that could bring another world-changer to St Andrews. Together we can shape the future.
why support a scholarship?
By supporting a Wardlaw Scholarship you can help provide a means-tested award of £4,400 per year for the duration of the student's undergraduate degree. The Scholarship will:
- help with their living costs – including accommodation, textbooks, lab kits and bills
- give them the financial freedom to join societies and student clubs and enjoy the St Andrews experience
- help them to focus on their studies without worrying about lack of part-time jobs and sudden changes to family finances.
"Supporting a Wardlaw Scholarship literally and permanently changes the life of an intelligent young person who is brimming with potential. Through your generosity, they will gain access to a St Andrews education – and the joy, stimulation, and rewards that such an education brings. This is an immensely precious gift – and a very special thing to do."

what impact does a scholarship have?
Some of our students describe the very real impact that their Scholarship has had on their lives:
Hannah Martin
'I am very grateful to Charis Kozel for funding this scholarship. It makes such a huge difference by allowing me to focus so much more time on my studies without financial stress. I am so excited to carry out my medical placements with NHS Fife, especially now the new National Orthopaedic and Trauma Centre that has opened. Learning in this incredible new space will be such a privilege and I hope to do do my elective studies within the field of orthopaedics. In the future, I would like to join the army and use my skills to help those who have risked their lives to provide safety to their country.'
Rachel thorp
'During a cost-of-living crisis, this scholarship has been fundamental to my academic success and mental health. It has helped me cover everything from electricity bills and sports kit, to paying for trains to job interviews and trips to Edinburgh National Archives. You have made my academic dreams a reality and have allowed me to establish my sense of self in the world'
Hannah James
'The scholarship has enabled me to participate in extracurricular activities and events that have been crucial for my personal and professional growth. I am graduating not only with a degree, but with valuable experiences, skills and a clear vision for my future: a career in the healthcare industry where I can apply my mathematical skills to real-world problems and contribute to advancements in public health and patient care..'
Denis Chirita
'Thanks to my scholarship I was able to live in halls with people who supported me and enhanced my academic journey. This year I was able to give back by helping fellow students with career and internship application advice, and I have also been able to teach mathematics to high school students. It brings me great joy to share my knowledge and experience with others.'
