I fell in love with Zambia in 2018 and I'm going back for round 2!

SAINTs Volunteer, Livingstone

The first programme of its kind in Livingstone, based in the Southern Province. Saints Sport, in support of Sport of Action (SIA) are committing a team of student volunteers from the University of St Andrews to a six-week programme of sport and education within three schools selected by SIA.

Four key sports have been identified as areas in which sustainable growth and development are required in order to support the transition from school to club sport: netball, football, volleyball and handball as well as developing drama as a tool to support learning and communication skills

The volunteers core aims are to help inspire these young people to develop and use the transferable skills gained through sport and drama as an opportunity for securing employment or further study.

who am i?

Hi! I'm Izzy and here are a few things you should know about me: I'm a third culture kid, a footballer, an avid artist and a biologist with ambitions of attending medical school and becoming a doctor. I love travelling, immersing myself in new cultures, learning new languages and positively impacting the communities around me.

Fun fact: I speak three languages fluently and have a worker's knowledge of a fourth!

WHAT AM I DOING and why should you care?

Zambia holds a special place in my heart.

Back in 2018 I was part of the Volunteer Zambia team that went out to Lusaka to train local community leaders and arm them with the knowledge necessary to establish sustainable sports programmes in their neighbourhoods. It was exciting to help in ways that aligned with local cultural norms so I could learn more about the world – and about me. My time in Zambia was the most rewarding, challenging and meaningful part of my career at St Andrews and has definitely shaped the way I think for the better.

My degree focuses on infectious diseases and their mechanisms of contagion, treatment and broader impact on society. I saw the effects that diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria had on the Fountain of Hope community (where I spent most of my time) and became upset and frustrated because these diseases are preventable and because people are dying as a result of inadequate access to medical care.

This summer, in addition to continuing to work with Sport in Action (A Zambian sports non-profit) I will therefore be volunteering at local hospitals and clinics to develop my understanding of public health before I apply to medical schools.

I want to do something to help by forging my path towards my dream career in the country that means the most to me.
